Introduction The Government of Bihar introduced the Mukhyamantri Vidyut Upbhokta Sahayata Yojana to reduce the electricity burden on households and ensure affordable power for every family in the state. Initially, the scheme focused on providing per-unit electricity subsidy to consumers. On 18 July 2025, the Bihar Cabinet took a major step forward by expanding the scope of the scheme. Under the revised decision, domestic households now receive free electricity up to 125 units every month. This move directly supports middle-class and economically weaker families by lowering their monthly expenses. The responsibility of implementing this scheme lies with Bihar State Power Holding Company Limited (BSPHCL). The scheme applies to both rural and urban households and works entirely through the existing electricity billing system. Consumers do not need to apply or complete any formal registration process. As long as monthly electricity consumption remains within the prescribed limit, the electricity bill shows a zero payable amount. This transparent and automatic system helps eliminate middlemen and prevents misuse. Benefits The Mukhyamantri Vidyut Upbhokta Sahayata Yojana offers direct financial relief to domestic electricity consumers across Bihar. Under this scheme, eligible households receive up to 125 units of electricity every month completely free of cost. The benefit does not apply partially; instead, the government covers the entire bill amount if consumption stays within the limit. The free electricity benefit includes energy charges, fixed charges, and electricity duty, ensuring that consumers do not face hidden costs. If a household uses more than 125 units in a month, the government still supports them by offering subsidized rates on the extra units consumed. Other non-domestic electricity consumers continue to receive subsidies as per earlier provisions. Overall, the scheme improves energy affordability while encouraging responsible electricity usage. Eligibility The scheme applies only to permanent residents of Bihar. To receive benefits, the consumer must hold a valid domestic electricity connection issued by the state power distribution companies. The free electricity benefit applies only up to 125 units per month. Consumption beyond this limit attracts charges on additional units. Both rural and urban households qualify equally under this scheme, provided they meet the basic conditions. Documents Since no application process exists, documents are not submitted separately. However, consumers should keep the following ready for verification or support purposes :- Aadhaar Card. Latest Electricity Bill. Registered Mobile Number. These documents help resolve billing issues or complaints, if required. Process to Apply The Bihar Government has clearly stated that no application or registration is required for this scheme. There is no OTP-based process, website form, or mobile registration linked to the Mukhyamantri Vidyut Upbhokta Sahayata Yojana. Any message, call, or link claiming otherwise is fraudulent. The electricity department automatically applies the benefit every month based on meter readings. The power company records consumption and generates the bill accordingly. If monthly usage stays within 125 units, the system issues a zero-amount electricity bill. When consumption crosses the limit, the bill includes charges only for excess units at subsidized rates. Consumers should remain alert and avoid sharing personal details with unknown sources in the name of free electricity registration.
