Introduction The Chaa Sundari Scheme is a flagship housing initiative launched by the Government of West Bengal to support tea garden workers who do not own a permanent house. The state government introduced this scheme on 17 September 2020 with a clear focus on improving living conditions in tea garden areas. West Bengal has more than 370 tea gardens, employing over three lakh permanent workers, most of whom belong to Scheduled Tribe communities. Due to low income and unstable living conditions, many families struggle to build a house on their own. To address this issue, the government decided to provide free, fully constructed houses to eligible tea garden workers. Under this scheme, beneficiaries receive a safe and durable home without paying any construction cost. The Housing Department of West Bengal implements and monitors the scheme. Each house constructed under the Chaa Sundari Scheme includes basic living facilities and ensures dignity, safety, and long-term shelter for poor tea garden families.
